Lima – 1982
My art and my forms of expression come from the visual and the audio fragments that have travelled through my life and the lives of others. From television and Saturday morning cartoons to the eclectic sounds of rock and cumbia on the streets of Lima. From punk and “Nueva Ola” on mix tapes, the graphics of a santería shop, history books and Peruvian folklore, to skateboarding and bicycles. These fragments have become part of my visual language and a personal collective imaginarium from which my mind selects its inspiration and brings something new to life.
My creating is an active process of sharing and bringing a new story into the world. I am fascinated by the game of interaction with the spectator, and intend to create something that becomes a love letter or a whisper to a collective imagination and someone elses story to tell. Different art pieces act as a band of travelling magicians with their own ideas and stories, arriving somewhere new and allowing the person who encounters it to hop on board the wagon.
There is a sense of learning through play in this process. A final form becomes a narrative movement frozen in time, like different frames of a story held still. The spectator discovers the clues, enters the game and completes the story through their own imagination.
I create by mixing techniques gathered through years of practice and study, drawing from the artesanías of Peruvian artisans, street art, bricolage and the classical techniques of art school. These different languages meet to create works that are playful, handmade and layered, inviting the spectator not simply to look, but to imagine what comes next.
